The first diseases decimating the native population occurred around 1770. From a population estimated at 100,000, the native population declined to under 10,000 by 1850. Since that time, the number of humans in the Pacific Northwest have increased to almost 11,000,000 in 2000. Native American population estimates are taken from Boyd and state population figures are from the U.S. Census.
