Course Objective
This course provides a survey of the major social, political,
economic, and cultural forces that have been at work from the early
20th century to the present as China is being transformed from a
traditional society to a modern one. Emphasis will be given to the
recent developments in the People's Republic of China. Topics include
the following: social conditions, the Nationalist and Communist
revolutions, new culture movement, the Japanese invasion, economic
reforms, democracy movement, changing status of women and family
structure, literature and the arts, Hong Kong, Taiwan and the future
of China's reunification.
Course Format
Lecture and discussion supplemented by videos.
