The following biosafety videocassettes are maintained by Environmental
Health & Safety (EH&S). Most of these videos are intended for specific
audiences so additional information regarding the videos is also listed. If you
have any questions or would like to view any of these videos, please contact the
Biosafety Officer at 7-2276 or EH&S at 7-2273.
- Bloodborne Pathogens: Training for the Office Worker (Length: approx. 6 minutes)
The target audience is office personnel or others who would
be unlikely to encounter bloodborne pathogens outside of assisting with basic
first aid. This brief video covers the basic principles of Universal Precautions
which everyone can benefit from knowing for both on- and off-the-job situations.
- Bloodborne Pathogens: Workplace Precautions for Industry (Length: approx. 19 min.)
This video is most applicable to emergency responders (those
personnel designated to act in an emergency situation) and janitorial/housekeeping
staff. It addresses HIV and HBV transmission, Universal Precautions and the
Bloodborne Pathogen Standard.
- Hidden Dangers - HBV and the Public Safety Worker (Length: approx. 15 minutes)
Although this video mainly addresses the risks of disease
transmission for public safety workers such as paramedics, it provides an excellent
explanation of hepatitis B virus. This information, in con-junction with a medical
consultation, is useful for those who may wish to receive the HBV vaccine.
- The Hidden Danger - HBV (Healthcare Version) (Length:
approx. 15 minutes)
This video covers the same principles as the previously listed
title with the exception that the target audience for this video includes nurses,
lab technicians and physicians.
- Bloodborne Pathogens (Length: approx. 10 minutes)
This video is applicable to virtually all audiences. It emphasizes
appropriate levels of precautions and addresses misinformation about bloodborne
pathogens and disease transmission.
- Controlling Your Risks - HIV in the Research Lab (Length: approx. 28 minutes)
This video was designed mainly for researchers working with
HIV but, because Universal Precautions require that all clinical specimens be
handled as infectious, this video offers some valuable information to anyone
working with these kinds of samples (research assistants, PI's, etc.). The video
addresses routes of entry, principles of containment, personal protective equipment
and decontamination.
- Working Safely with HIV in the Research Laboratory (Length: approx. 20 minutes)
As with the previous title, this video offers information
that is applicable to all potentially pathogenic materials. This is the most
applicable video for Principal Investigators that provides information on the
CDC/NIH guidelines and addresses the role of the PI in establishing laboratory
biosafety practices.
