Ceanothus jepsonii E. L. Green var. purpureus W. L. Jepson
Habit: Shrubs to 2.0 m.
Stems: ascending to erect, not rooting at nodes; twigs red-brown, with whitish bloom or not, round, smooth, glabrous, rigid.
Leaves: evergreen, opposite; not clustered; stipules thickened, persistent; petioles to 2 mm; blades widely elliptic to +/- round, 1.3--2.5 x 1.0--2.2 cm, bases rounded, 1-veined, margins not revolute, spine-toothed, undulate, holly-like , tips obtuse, abaxially hairy on veins, microscopically canescent between, adaxially, glabrous, green, +/- troughed.
Inflorescences: axillary, umbel-like, 1.8--2.8 cm.
Flowers: deep blue to purple.
Fruits: globose, +/- 5 mm broad, smooth, horns slender, near apex; valve crests 0.
Cytology: 2n = 24. (M. Nobs, 1963)
Flowering: in early to late spring
Habitat: dry, chaparral-covered, rocky, volcanic slopes; below 500 m
