Majors in Ethnic Studies take comparative core courses on "race" and ethnicity and select one major area of concentration from the following: African American Studies, Asian Pacific American Studies, Chicana/o Latina/o Studies, Native American Studies. In addition majors must complete a nine-credit graded internship working with an entity that provides service to one or more of the ethnic communities named above. The internship credits count as part of the total required hours for the major (51), and therefore carries a grade. In addition to an area of specialization, students are encouraged to take additional upper-division courses comparative studies.
Minors in Ethnic Studies take core courses on "race" and ethnicity and select a major area of concentration from those listed under the major. The minor internship, which is optional, consists of three credits.
Major Requirements (52 required credits)
In addition to an Ethnic Studies core of issue-based courses which examine the intersections of race, class and gender and their relation to the construction of ethnicity, two areas of emphasis on specific ethnic groups and a community internship are required. (Second area of emphasis may incorporate more than one ethnic group). Students work closely with a departmental advisor to determine a program of studies that best meets their needs. A grade point average of 2.0 is required and majors must earn a grade of C- in all major courses. Individualized research and study is limited to 3 credits.

6 credits from one of the following focus areas. This will be your primary area of emphasis.
9 credits distributed across the remaining focus areas (3 credits from each)
15 credits of upper division electives taken from your primary area of emphasis. Must include at least 6 credits at 400-level. With approval of major advisor, student may take some of these electives in an area other than the primary area of emphasis or from a list of non-departmental offerings.
Minor Requirements (27 required credits)
Students will work closely with a departmental advisor to determine a program of studies that best meets their needs. A grade point average of 2.0 and a grade of C- in all minor course work are required. Individualized research or study is limited to 3 credits.

Select one sequence from the following (6 credits total):12 credits of upper division electives to be approved by the major advisor. Must include at least 3 credits at 400-level. With approval of minor advisor, student may take some of these electives from a list of non-departmental offerings.
Option: Minor internship (ES 410) is optional. If internship is taken (3 credits), upper division electives will be reduced to 9 credits and student needs to take ES 455 Internship Seminar (1 credit).
Ethnic Studies majors and minors must satisfy all University Baccalaureate Core and College of Liberal Arts requirements for the BA or BS degree.
